I’ve just made another trip to visit artist Esther Coombs to see her latest work and complete further product photography for her. I’ve been photographing Esther’s work, based on reusing and recycling, for a number of years. Her work is entirely unique, often challenging to photograph (so much shiny surfaces!) If I am ever in any doubt about my pricing structure – which isn’t often – I think back to an experience I had last year when seven months pregnant with our first child. I sought out one of these 3D ultrasound scans, it being one of those ever so exciting things you do when expecting your first. I was made aware of the minimum spend before I entered the premises and had committed myself to a £135 package. However, as I left the building, barely thirty minutes before arriving, I wondered whether it had all been worth it.

For my hard-earned cash I received a flimsy little image, printed on their Inkjet there and then, of my unborn child. In addition, a CD of low resolution, thumbnail images which, if you understand image quality, were generally unsuitable for printing and putting in my baby album.

OK, so I didn’t expect a spectacular canvas for my £135. I’m well aware that, within that package, I was also paying for the glamorous high-street premises, the highly trained staff, the specialist equipment, and the excellent customer service.

Except the latter really didn’t exist. The lady who scanned me gave the impression that she really couldn’t be bothered on this Saturday afternoon. She wasn’t personable at all, made no conversation and didn’t even force a smile. It really wouldn’t have taken much to make us feel loved. I was really disappointed, a little hurt even. I felt like they wanted us out the door as quick as possible.

There was something missing from my 3D ultrasound experience, I wouldn’t go again and I wouldn’t recommend the company to anyone else. My £135 guarantees people a much happier experience. They receive beautifully glossy prints, perfectly edited and printed at the best lab in the UK. They gain a full hour of photography and my undivided attention. Equally as important is the enthusiasm, friendliness and sincerity they are greeted with. This makes the difference between an unsatisfied and disappointed customer, and one who will come back for more.

It’s really not hard…

I am often asked to attend christenings to capture all the special friends and family who have come together to celebrate a new baby. I also do ”official” christening photo sessions, which take place after the christening and capture the child in their beautiful clothes. They’re such lovely assignments to do, I really enjoy the unveiling of the outfit!

Week day weddings

I’ve just read an interesting article on the BBC News Magazine website, by Tom de Castella, outlining how more couples are choosing to get married on week days. Apparently, it can “lead to savings of about 40% in high season”.

However, do you think weddings held on a Tuesday are as exciting as those held on a Saturday? Admittedly, I have yet to do a mid-week wedding. Sure, I have attended a Friday and Sunday event, but still mostly Saturdays. I’ve yet to be asked to do anything different! (Go on, ask me!)
