Choosing a baby photographer

I have encountered countless parents who refer to the “thousands of photographs” they’ve taken of their little one, especially their first. Whilst they treasure those snaps taken at home, these proud parents still make the decision to invest in a professional portrait of their child. A beautiful photograph which captures a baby’s innocence and character, which moves you every time you look at it, is an extremely valuable keepsake.

So how do you decide who to give this all-important job to? There are many photography offers out there, numerousphotographers to choose from; all who boast “creative” and “original” baby portraits. Here are some tips to help you sift through the market.

· Rely on recommendation. If your friend is happy with the photos taken of baby Isabella, it’s likely you’ll be happy too. Have a look at her finished products, whether it’s a framed photograph or a series of prints. Although the best-of-the-best photos featuring on the photographer’s website have won you over, Isabella’s photographs are, after all, a true representation of the quality you’ll be receiving.

· Find out whether the photographer is CRB checked. You are, after all, taking your most prized possession to a stranger’s premises. It will put your mind at rest to confirm they’ve been given the ‘all clear’ by the authorities.

· Consider the photographer’s style. Will you remain happy with the giant canvas of Sonny wearing his Manchester United football kit for years to come, or do you wish he’d been photographed in something more timeless? Are you looking for an artistic portrayal of your baby or a classic portrait?

· Visit the photographer. If the photographer’s website doesn’t satisfy you, make an appointment to pop in and view further examples of his or her work. More importantly, make sure he/she is the person you would like to photograph your baby and family.

· Talk to the photographer. If you don’t have time for a visit, avoid the endless emails which fly back and forth discussing dates and times, and pick up the phone! This way, you’ll be able to discuss your requirements, your personal taste, the pricelist…as well as gaining an impression of the service you are going to receive.

· Get an idea of price. Some photographers may be keen to talk you through the pricelist before the session whilst some may prefer to explain your options when they can show you the products in the studio. Don’t be alarmed by the latter, it is not necessarily wrong; just be sure you’re absolutely clear on the starting price and what you get for your money.

· Budget is not best. As with all things in life, whether it’s a new car or a microwave meal; you get what you pay for. Ask yourself, whether you want the Tesco Value, Tesco Finest or just Tesco middle-of-the-road baby portrait. There is a huge difference between the individual who dabbles in baby portraiture at the weekend as a hobby and the man who has invested endless time and money in building up a highly professional business and will provide an experience, and photography, you will never forget.
